Our vacation home "Casa MAHE" offers space for 1 - 2 persons
The traditionally built house is located in a quiet side street on the outskirts of Chelem, only 200 m from the sea. Lots of nature and few neighbors directly invite you to relax. The area is warm all year round (Ø over 30 °C) and very picturesque. In the village itself you can get everything for your daily needs. There are cafes, restaurants, stores and a 24/7 emergency doctor.
Yucatan's capital Mérida, the "white city" is easily reached by car or bus in half an hour. There you will find a beautiful old town, the oldest cathedral in the Americas, very special markets, many stores and sights, as well as an international airport.
Casa MAHE was completely renovated at the end of 2022. We had the furniture built by a small craft business in early 2023.
The house has a nice big room with a view to the garden. At night you can see the stars from the comfortable queen size bed. A dream to sleep and relax on.
The matching nightstands provide enough space for personal items by the bed and there is storage space on the shelf for clothes or other daily necessities.
WLAN and TV complete the offer.
If you don't eat your way through the offerings of local restaurants and snack bars anyway, the Casa MAHE kitchen has everything you need to cook on vacation.
The kitchen is equipped with a 2-plate induction stove and a refrigerator. There is a sink and various storage facilities.
Cutlery, dishes and glasses, a salad bowl and bowls as well as pots and a pan are also available.
The bathroom: sink, a toilet and a comfortable, large walk-in shower.
We have a very special highlight in the bathroom: the shower is lined with traditional chukum.
You've never heard of chukum? No wonder, because it only exists in Yucatán. It is the resin of the chukum trees, which grow exclusively in Yucatán. To take advantage of its water-repellent properties, the bark of the tree is boiled twice. The resin thus obtained is mixed with limestone-based stucco to obtain this unique material with which, among other things, our shower was treated.

In the house we have an original hand-knotted hammock made of Tixkokob - very comfortable for sleeping and pleasant when it is hot. The Maya traditionally sleep in hammocks, often whole families together. Why not try out how a hammock feels to sleep in?
Since nature and environment are very important to us, a solar system provides hot water.
There is also a ceiling fan and air conditioning.
You will love the outdoor shower for pleasant refreshment in between.
About Chelem, Yucatan/Mexico
Chelem is a small fishing town and is located directly on the Gulf of Mexico. With its charm and flair, Chelem has become a very hip and cool place to live or vacation in recent years.
Chelem is located north of Mérida and is part of the port city of Progreso with its famous pier and the wonderful Malecón. It is a hotspot for kiters and surfers. Since the shore area is partly quite shallow, the beach is also well suited for children. There is a zone of mangroves that extends to Sisal. And there are flamingos. In general, many interesting birds can be observed here.
Chelem means magpie in English, but it also refers to a very characteristic plant that grows along the beach area. It looks like an agave, but forms a large cane with flowers that can grow up to 5 meters high, which makes the landscape unique.
It is a very popular destination for snowbirds who come from the US and Canada to spend the winters in warm weather. There is also a foreign community that lives in Chelem and has formed great alliances with locals to create a very hip and fun togetherness.
